Massage strengthens the immune system and helps fight viruses

More and more studies indicate that massage helps strengthen immunity during the rise in the incidence of SARS, influenza, and other infections and viruses.

Many people are now looking for ways to strengthen their health and immunity, and massage is a great help in this matter. According to many studies, massage increases the activity of the immune system. So, in 2015, scientists from the American Association of Massage Therapists worked with people whose immune system was weakened due to various factors. Massage did its job perfectly – just one classical massage session caused a significant increase in the activity of white blood cells, the main function of which is the fight against viruses. The activity of lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cells and play a key role in the formation of immunity, also increased significantly. Here’s what scientists say about this:

Scientists from the US National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, along with researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, randomly assigned 53 healthy adults to two different groups. Participants from the first group attended one session of classical massage per week, and those who were divided into the second group attended sessions of the so-called “placebo massage”, which uses so light touches with the back of the hand that it has no practical effect.

Sessions in both groups lasted 45 minutes, and professional licensed massage therapists were responsible for them. Before and after the session, blood samples were taken from the subjects to determine the levels of certain hormones and circulating lymphocytes (white blood cells). The researchers found that in people who attended classical massage sessions, after the session, there was a pronounced decrease in antidiuretic hormone or vasopressin (arginine-vasopressin), which plays an important role in regulating blood pressure and water retention. In the placebo massage group, no such changes were detected. After the first session, significant changes in the level of the stress hormone – cortisol – were not detected. However, it should be noted that the analyzes showed a significant decrease in the number of cytokine proteins (interleukin 4 and interleukin 10, levels of interleukin-1 beta, interleukin 2, interleukin 5 and tumor necrosis factor) did not change in the classical massage group compared to the placebo group.

These preliminary data allowed scientists to conclude that even one session of classical massage has a clinically significant effect on the hormonal and immune systems of the human body.

Remember – you should come to the massage session only if you feel good. Even a simple cold or cough is a reason to postpone the visit. Firstly, during the massage, blood circulation improves, which can lead to the spread of infection, and secondly, you can put the masseur and other clients at risk of getting sick. Check the temperature, listen to your body, and if everything is fine, come to us – we are waiting for you!
